Parenting vs Effective Parenting

Parenting – Is An Art

We all Parents are doing a great job in bringing up our little adults. Placing their life in front of our eyes we ensure that we provide everything which we find it to help them grow better. Eighty percent of the parents do think alike irrespective of their financial status. Because they know very well how important Parenting is.

Thinking why I had placed a title as Parenting vs Effective Parenting when I say that we are doing a wonderful Parenting job already?

Yes, my dear friends. Parenting is very common but not Effective Parenting. An effective parenting is what is more vital to bring up kids of the current generation.

To shape our kids‘ life is not only the teacher’s responsibility but also the Parent’s too.

Parenting – What We All Do?

Keeping aside the regular pieces of stuff like providing food, shelter, clothing etc.

  • It is good that most of us had understood the importance of learning while playing.
  • By knowing how competitive the world now is, we ensure that we give the best to our kids that will help the kids develop their skills.
  • We teach them the importance of studying.
  • Understood the need of extra curricular activities for their balanced growth. We exposed our kids to art, music, literature, and craft activities.
  • We know how to watch our kids activities to protect them when situations arise. For example, every parent is aware of the need for not allowing the kids lonely, especially with the gadgets.

But, are we sure that the regular parenting which we do help our kids in all the aspects?

This is where the difference comes from regular parenting and effective parenting.

Effective Parenting – Is Like A Modern Art.

What All We Need To Do & Not To Do

  • Make our kids understand that intelligence is not always natural and it can be tweaked extraordinarily.
  • Respect the fact that the world now is different. Our kids won’t have the same lifestyle as we had as a child. Stay updated about the latest trends so you can help them better.
  • Help them understand the importance of reading books. For this, the parents need to read books first. Read books for them.

– Take them to a library. Let them see how it looks like. Teach them how to borrow books, allow them to manage their membership card.

– Ask the kid to narrate the story they read from the book. Ask questions.

– The last time I went to a library was when I was in my eighth standard. This may be the same case with many parents who are reading this post. We need to wake up first before we try to bring up our kids, friends.

  • Teach the Kids that Money Comes from Work.
  • Teach them how to make Money work for them instead of them working for money when they grow.

– For this, the parents need to understand things better. I would suggest you to read “Rich Dad And Poor Dad” for more insights. Trust me, you will love that book.

  • Mathematics is everything, it is gonna be required all their life.

– Encourage them to like mathematics. If you find them struggling, try different methods through which you can make them understand the problem so that they do not hate the subject. Because, once they hate, it is done already in a negative way.

Youtube can help us with various methods of solving a problem. With an easy as well as a tough approach.

– Speak to their Maths teacher and request them to help you in making your kid like Mathematics. That moment they will stop scolding the kid even if the kid could not solve a problem instead they will encourage more.

Motivation is the only thing needed. If it comes from the teacher the results would be great.

  • Introduce simple finance to them at home. Because schools teach only to excel in academics most of the time. Good understanding of Finance when they are young will help them a lot.
  • Sow the seeds of curiosity in their minds. Get them used to think about things instead of being targets of things.

– Fishes in an aquarium at home, for example, can ensure that your small kids stay focused.

– Board games like chess can be supportive here.

– Teach them origami (Japanese paper-folding).

Reason – It has got fixed instructions that end up being a little ambiguous. When it starts to get complicated, they have to fix their mistakes or think on how to prevent them. It has a major impact on improving their problem-solving abilities.

  • Do not teach them the smart way of doing things. Let them become hard worker first. They themselves will understand the difference between hard working and smart working when they grow older.

– Learning to do things via the regular approach is the base. Without knowing the harder way, one cannot find a smart and easier way.

  • Show them things by doing it yourself first at home.

– Try DIY videos on youtube when you have a need to buy a small furniture. By doing yourself in front of your kids, you give them more confidence on building things on their own.

– Stop looking for a plumber and electricians to handle smaller tasks at home when required. For example, we can very well change the electronic choke of the tube lights at home.

  • Praise them for their efforts and not for the result they had achieved.
  • Encourage them to build a friendship with others. The more friends they have the more ideas they get to hear.

– For this, you need to allow them to interact even with unknown kids in the public parks.

  • Intelligence without creativity and individuality is worthless. Allow them to experiment things.

– May be, we might need to spend money on painting the walls again to hide their drawings, but they learn more out of it.

– Do not save them from difficulty instead give them techniques to handle it on their own.

  • Allow them to choose their food from the menu card when you are at a restaurant as a family.

– By doing this you allow them to take ownership of things. If they like it they will order it next time if not they ignore. By this, they start taking decisions.

  • The more you speak to them the more knowledge they gain.

– Do not restrict them from asking questions. Let them ask whatever they want to. If you are unable to answer it due to their age factor, find a different way by tweaking your answer, but they should know the answer.

  • Sing when you are cooking/taking a shower, dance if you would like to dance at home. Let them know that you do not feel shy to do what you like when people are around at home.

– This way the kids won’t feel uncomfortable when they need to perform something in front of their class mates or a group. Stage fear will stop their progress if not plucked out from their minds in the early stages.

  • Taking care of the kids during the early age is good but ensure that you register them in a Preschool by Age 3. They will become very smart.

– For example, in western countries, parents allow their ten years old kids to sell Lemonades in small gatherings. This way the kids get to understand the money they had invested and the profit they gained.

– Do not limit your kids’ options by asking this question, ” Would you like to become a doctor or an engineer?” The world is full of opportunities.

  • Allow them to follow their passions but guide them to achieve great results on their passions.
  • Do not get scared and scare the kids too when they catch hold of insects like Cockroach or similar insects which are not harmful. Let them touch and feel the well-known puppies near your house. Ensure that you stay beside.

– In Japan, they teach kids about Insects too in schools via Insects lab. Kids in Japan know what are the insects which are harmful and unharmful.

Thank You to Mr. Raman, my neighbor friend who shared the above mentioned valuable information with me.
  • Teach them failure is good. The more they fail the closer they are towards success. Teach them.
  • Educate them on preserving natural sources and energies. We are done almost. They are just starting their lives.
  • Be an example, show care to others. They learn from us. Appreciate them when they show empathy and emotional intelligence.
  • A smart kid is best raised by him or her self. As a part of parenting, just sow the seeds of self-discipline and delayed gratification. Everything else will follow.
  • Expose them to music. Allow them to even just bang on kitchen utensils made of stainless steel or any non-fragile items. A music has its benefits irrespective of the place from where it comes from.

Musical training is holistic and develops a wide range of important skills, such as speech, mathematics, and reading skills.

  • Help them learn at least two languages as early as possible. Both music and language create neural pathways that enhance learning of all kinds later on.
  • Never advance your kids at school even if the school find the kid to be very smart and eligible for advanced classes. That will just do damage to their maturity level.
  • Never tell them that they are smart. Instead, tell them that they have high potential and teach them to work hard to attain that potential.
  • Do not expect your kid to be a perfectionist. It is not gonna take them anywhere. Look at the mirror, we can understand that we are not perfect either even at this age.
  • Eat healthily and exercise regularly so that they understand the importance of exercise and being healthy.
  • Teach kids the value of Time. Finland is on top in Education not only because of their teachers but also because of the Parents.

– Parents in Finland value education and ensures that their children will be on time, will be prepared for class and will not be disruptive.

  • Be patient. It is a Process. Keep moving forward in shaping them for a better life.

Happy Effective Parenting!

Do You Listen To Music While Working?

Do You Listen To Music While Working?

I listen to music most of the times while at work. Specifically, when I am involved in some task on which I am very much familiar and comfortable. In case, if I am on to something and if it is a bit new or if I need to learn and then perform, I use the pause button too sometimes.

This is not the first time that I am writing about Music. You will be able to find an article which I had already written on how Baroque Music helps in boosting brain power, productivity, sleep and more. Just use the search bar which is available in the blog to find it.

As a trail post, I am here again to share something which I had recently come across and enjoyed it even when I am there at work. Trust me, I do work on tasks at my work place and this listening to music part happens in parallel. In the beginning, I use to listen to regular songs from the movies but moved on to Baroque and Jazz lately as I had found them awesome.

What Is It Now?

Nowadays, it is not Baroque or Jazz music. It is of a different kind and it makes me fall in love with it every time I listen to.

Could there be anyone in this world who does not like to listen to the below sounds?

The sound that comes out when,

  • There is a Breeze.
  • We are alone at a Seashore.
  • It Rains.
  • The water flows into the river.
  • We sit near the campfire/fire place.
  • The fall of leaves during an Autumn.

Don’t we sometimes miss that,

  • Calmness we experience while walking inside the woods/forest.
  • That awesome train sound that we get to hear after everyone in the compartment sleeps.

All the above-mentioned sounds have a tendency to make us feel different in a positive way. Though, we know that they are all awesome to hear, do we have time for all these small lovely things in our faster lives?

Uber CEO – Why Not Marissa Mayer?

Uber CEO – Why Not Marissa Mayer?

Marissa Mayer, the name which we can find in the list of the powerful technology leaders in the world. Though, she is not the CEO of Yahoo! now, we can look forward to the news about her in short time saying that XX company had roped in Marissa as its new CEO. I had assumed that Marissa would be the best bet for the CEO position at Uber.

But, the news about Dara Khosrowshahi (Cause-Row-Sha-hee) as Uber’s new CEO made me dig further more on the reason why Uber did not choose Marissa.

Here is the latest information. The current Expedia CEO had mentioned that he is planning to accept the CEO of uber position. It is to be noted that there were other leaders too like Jeff Immelt, CEO of GE and HP CEO Meg Whitman in the shortlisted candidate’s list.

I had started to admire Marissa Mayer – a tech leader with great competency from the moment I saw her one-page resume over the internet via Linkedin.

I had read and followed the news more about Marissa when compared to the other eligible candidates mentioned above. Hence, I am gonna jot down my understanding of why uber had not chosen Marissa for their CEO position.

Uber – A Company With No Shepherd For Now:

Yes, the leading transportation service provider in the world is without a CEO since June after the founder CEO Travis Kalanick had moved out. With the negative images gained recently, the company needs a most efficient person to lead. To bring them back to track especially to erase the negative impressions from the memory of their own employees and the users who rely on this great startup.

Qualities That Uber Might Have Looked For In A Candidate:

  • Experience in the field of Travel and Transportation.
  • A person who will go along rather than dominating.
  • Peer friendly leader.
  • A leader with more positive feedback on their records.
  • An individual who can positively impact the employee morale.
  • A person who can help grow the revenue of the company

All these being said, let us now see the reasons that could have forced Uber to drop Marissa Mayer’s name from the CEO pick list.

All the below mentioned are purely based on what I had read and learned from various sources. Some of you might deny some points too but still, I am going ahead…

Why Not Marissa Mayer?

May be because,

  • She is a person who had got more products based experience and not operational based.
  • Her style of work. She relies more on data-driven management and very particular about everything in detail.
  • The peer feedback – People who had worked under her leadership says that she is robotic.
  • Approval rating as per glass door went down from 99% in 2012 to 64% at the time of Marrisa leaving the company.
  • She is not inclined towards delegation.
  • Marissa does not speak much even with the people who directly report to her unless required.
  • Read that she had once micromanaged a senior person when that person’s team members were present.
  • She is not always punctual.

Everyone has got their own style of work which sometimes becomes a hit and sometimes a flop. This awesome tech leader had lost the grace because of the above-mentioned traits as some of them did not go well with her peers and people around.

Why Dara Khosrowshahi?

  • He is the CEO of Expedia, a travel company. Remember that Trivago advertisement nowadays on TV? It is also owned by Expedia.
  • Has also got the required finance background with a stint of 7 years at Allen & Co bank.
  • A Great leader according to the employees of Expedia.
  • He has a proven track record of increasing the revenue of Expedia from $2.1 billion in 2005 to $8.7 billion in 2016.
  • Honored as a Highest Rated CEO with an approval rate of 93% according to the glass door.
  • A friendly and outspoken type.
  • He is surrounded by relatives with huge potential in the field of business as well as in the technology area.

The Take Away’s:

Both Marissa Mayer and Dara Khosrowshahi are great leaders and there is no doubt about it.

But still, from the above mentioned Why and Why Not, it is very clear on what is required to become a “Highly” successful leader.

I am using the term as “Highly” as I strongly believe that Marissa is also a successful leader.

Who has not got negatives?

I agree, that certain things did not go well for Marissa at Yahoo but that does not mean that it is going to be like that forever.

From my understanding on what I read about Marissa, she is a great listener. That is one of the best and great trait a business leader should have. She is a role model for many.

Keeping my fingers crossed now to hear the news about the firm which she would soon be leading.

Happy Tuesday 🙂

Mentor- A Trait That Most Of Us Ignore:

An experienced and trusted adviser, that is what dictionary says. An insight provided by a mentor can help an individual reach greater heights not only in their career but also in their life.

Here Comes The Proof:

Why do you think these technology business leaders listed below have got a Mentor?

Do Not Like To Have A Mentor?

There are few big names in the exception category too. If you would like to skip having a Mentor for your career then ensure that you fall in the below category.

Stand in front of the mirror – Do you resemble Elon Musk not by appearance but by traits?

The Space X, Tesla.. founder do not like to have a mentor but shows interest towards negative comments from friends. For example, he values the comments from his friend Larry Page.

If you really think that you had trained yourself to never give up and think extremely logical then I would suggest you stick to the path which Elon Musk had followed.

The Benefits Of Having A Mentor:

  • To have a mentor is the Key To Efficiency when it comes to career.
  • You learn more and get to hear more real time experiences.
  • An exchange of ideas and knowledge happens.
  • Your network grows.
  • The way you look at a problem change.
  • You make better decisions and stay productive.
  • Get rid of issues much faster in the career as well as in life.
  • You learn leadership qualities.
  • What is next will never be a question in your mind as you already got a streamlined career path.
  • You will be a critical resource in the workplace with a great visibility.
  • Become a go-to person at work with your gained in depth knowledge.
  • You stay motivated and inspired and also be a reason for others inspiration.
  • Your actions welcome promotions and recognitions.
  • Self-satisfaction.
  • Improved work/life balance, communication skills, confidence level and managerial qualities which are a must for a successful career.

Who Can Be A Mentor?

  • A Mentor should always be a person with more experience than you.
  • He/She can be in the same field in which you work or from a different field. It is recommended to have a mentor from the same line as your work nature when it comes to a successful career.
  • A Mentor need not always be your immediate Manager at work.

What To Do When You Have A Mentor?

  • Act on that thing once after getting an input.
  • Have something new and show progress on the task every time you meet or discuss.
  • Make them feel that you value them and their time.
  • Do not hesitate to let them know about what you do not know.
  • Be grateful to them.
  • Prepare a note on the lessons learned and share with them.

What Not To Do When You Have A Mentor?

  • Do not waste their time. They could have very well utilized that time for their own career improvement.
  • Stop asking simple things and doubts which a google search can clarify.
  • Do not try to act smart. If you think you know better, you should not have requested that person to mentor you for your career growth.
  • Stick to the timelines you had committed.

Disadvantages Of Having A Mentor:

  • You need to sacrifice some of your leisure time.
  • It might be difficult to work on parallel things. For example, if you have got a side hustle.

Do I have a Mentor?

Yes, I will have soon. I am already in the process of identifying a person and have requested one.

I do not resemble Elon Musk when I stand in front of the mirror. So, I am planning to follow the path which most other successful people had embraced.

Trust me, to get a good mentor is a not easy. If you had found a right person already but have not yet requested them, do fix up an appointment with them and discuss right away.

Early bird gets the worm.

The Potato Story

Consuming Potato Will Make Us Look Like A Potato

It is a well-known old story. Below are some more facts for you to know about this power packed vegetable “Potato”.

Before I make a deep dive, Today 19th of August 2017 is celebrated as National Potato Day! at the United States Of America. There is a day for Potato in the countries like United Kingdom, Ireland too.

I got what you are thinking. Sorry, Pal, I am yet to hear from someone on this practice in India. It would be great if you can share it if you are aware.

Alrighty then, let’s dive.

Is there any one who turn their face and keep their hands controlled even after seeing a fried potato chips?

Maybe around 30-40% of the population does that considering other factors like age and medical conditions. Most of us know that consumption of deep-fried items made of potato leads to obesity and will make us look plump. So, I am not here to convey any information about its effects on obesity etc. But, I am going to share something interesting which few of us do not know.

I go to buy vegetables every weekend. Sometimes, I did notice that some of the potatoes in the tray with a green colored patch on them.

All those times, I use to tell myself that they are still raw. It is funny if I think about it now. How can it be raw when it is never gonna become a fruit :).

It took me 33 years to get to know the real fact about the green patch on top of the potatoes which I had come across.

Interesting Fact Number – 1

Ever Imagined A Potato As A Weapon?

Irrespective of whether you had imagined or not, it can be used as a weapon. Here is how.

The green patch on the potatoes are not because they are raw but because they are old. The green color is nothing but the chlorophyll. A chlorophyll on the potatoes confirms the presence of Solanine.

What Is A Solanine?

Solanine – A glycoalkaloid poison which can be found in the vegetables like Tomatoes, Egg Plants, and Potatoes. The presence of this chemical compound in the vegetables and fruits like berries protects them from bugs, insects, and diseases. Good for them but not for humans.

The Possible Effects:

Consumption of the green colored potatoes might lead to neurological and gastrointestinal disorders. Some of the other symptoms are as follows,

Above mentioned is not all. In critical cases, Paralysis, Hypothermia, Jaundice and even deaths have been recorded.

What Not To Do & To Do:

  • Look for green patches, spots while buying potatoes, tomatoes, and eggplants and do not buy them.

– Yes, the potatoes are screened for solanine levels before it hits the market. But, do we know what happens and how long it stays at the shop.

  • Storing potatoes at home for more number of days is not recommended.

– Longer duration can lead to solanine content build up to dangerous levels. Hence, buy them as per the need.

  • Cut the green part before cooking. Keep them away from sunlight.

– Storing potatoes in dark controls the production of toxins.

  • A rotten potato in a closed room emits poisonous gas. A gas which is capable of taking a life of someone who enters that room. Maybe we can come across similar sequence in a thriller movie shortly.

Interesting Fact Number – 2

Can we consume potatoes which have got sprouts on top of it?

It is best not to consume those potatoes without removing the extra growths. Especially, restrict yourself from giving this to little children as the octopus like sprouts contain glycoalkaloid.

Interesting Fact Number – 3

Potatoes + Baking Soda – can help us to clean kitchen utensils like pans and objects made of metal to remove rust.

Interesting Fact Number – 4

A slice of potato is good to clean a foggy mirror or glass at home.

Interesting Fact Number – 5

Ha Ha! Here is the beauty tip. Placing sliced potatoes can make the dark circles around the eyes to fade.

Interesting Fact Number – 6

Too salty curries? Introducing potatoes in the salty curries absorb the salt without any changes in the taste. I have tried it in the year 2011.

Interesting Fact Number – 7
