Top 10 Things To Do When You Feel Stuck @ Workplace

Are You Stuck?

There are times when our mind gets frozen/stuck making us difficult to arrive at a decision. Some times when we are at the workplace and at times when we are at our home too. To get stuck or to experience indecisiveness is not very uncommon in our daily machine life.

We might find that we enter into a wishy-washy state in two kinds of scenarios.

  1. When we reach a point where we don’t find any more solution for an issue.
  2. When we have a lot of thoughts in mind but unable to act towards one.

Scenario – 1:

There is nothing in our world without a solution. The only thing what we need to do to tackle this scenario is to change the way we approach a problem in question.

My Experience With Scenario 1:

It was in the year 2011 and it was already past 11 PM. I was breaking my head at the work place while writing an ABAP logic as a part of my assignment. Though the program was written correctly, I was unable to get rid of the syntax error the system had thrown.

With most of the workstations empty, it was just my colleague-friend named Jeswanth Kadali and I in one of the conference room. My friend is a person who had started his career as an ABAP programmer.

Though it was just a cake walk for him to spot an issue in programs, that day the time was not in our favor. It was 11.30 PM already and we were unable to identify the reason for the error. My hopes drained, our eyes were dry and our minds were stuck with no alternatives.

With no options hitting our brain, I had pinged my onsite counterpart and explained the issue. He signed in into the system and confirmed that he sees a message “Syntax Check Successful” at the status bar of the SAP GUI. Awesome, we both sighed with a smile.

What Was The Issue?

None. We had looked at the issue in all major aspects. The only thing which we had missed is that we never tried to log out of the system and log in again. I am sure that most of the SAP consultants would have faced this scenario at least once in their career :).

A simple approach that we had overlooked, would have saved us time.

Scenario – 2:

The only thing needed to handle scenario 2 is a break. A human brain is a miracle. A medium that can make a person reach greater heights if utilized well. Giving our brain a break can be related to how we give rest to an electronic appliance or a machine after a long run by turning it off.

How To Unlock Ourselves When We Are Stuck?

Sitting idle will not help us to free up our brain. Do not wait.

Focus on to some simple tasks which we can complete in no time. The progression we had made in the new task will clear the mind.

The task you choose need not be specific to your work. It can be somewhat stupid too as I had mentioned below in this article.

Simple But Productive Tasks To Do When We Are Stuck:

  • Move from your place, stretch yourself or walk.

– You can move around to refill the water bottle.

  • Try Box Breathing technique to unlock your stuck mind.

– Navy Teams practice this technique to calm their nervous system and to remain stable at the time of stress.

  • Look at someone who is highly involved in a task.

– We have got something called “Mirror Neurons” in our brain. When we see someone who is working hard, that activates the mirror neurons of our brain. These neurons in our brain make us feel as though we are doing that task.

Ever thought about the below mentioned?

Why do we cry when we see an emotional scene in a movie?

Why do we feel bad when we come across an accident on a road?

It is none other than the mirror neurons that play a role here.

  • Clean your desk. If it’s already clean, clean the keyboard and the display of your laptop.

– Keyboards are the place where bacteria’s stays due to dirt accumulation.

– We need to switch off and switch on our Android cell phones at least once in two days. Doing so would clear the cache files, in turn, saves memory and will respond faster.

  • Move low priority emails to their respective folders in the mailbox.

– Execute the email rules you had set.

  • Watch that favorite clip that motivates you or makes you smile.
  • Listen to one good song that makes you forget every thing for few minutes.
  • Clean up or move unwanted old files and documents from the home screen of your computer to a folder.

– Having our files and documents organized well save us time when there is a need.

The Funny Act:

Below is one of the stupid/funny things that we can do to unlock our brain.

If you have a close friend/colleague nearby, press the seat lever of their chair. Do this with caution and only to your close friends.

– It creates laughter around you. Bring smiles on your friends face.

To bring a smile on others face is a great thing.

The above mentioned are not the only simple things we have got. Every individual will have their own interest making the options more dynamic. Do share these techniques with your friends and colleagues when you find them stuck.

If you have got some other approaches to unlock minds, feel free to share those in the comments section. Your approach might help many people who read this post.

Etiquettes That We Forget To Teach Our Kids

To teach good manners to the kids is the responsibility of the Parents. If we are thinking that the manners would be taught at school then we are wrong. Sooner or later we would be pushed to a spot to experience the shame.

Will we be comfortable if a near unknown person other than the teacher correct our kids in a gathering due to a wrong behavior?

No, Never – if that situation arises it is not the kid or kids who are at fault instead it is a fault of us, the Parents.

We teach our kids certain good habits but not all always. In fact, we ourselves do not know many etiquettes. Here are some of the etiquettes that we teach our kids.

  • Give Respect.
  • Look and respond when someone speaks to you.
  • Eat and chew with your mouth closed.
  • Say Hello and Thank You.
  • Table Manners.

But, the above mentioned are not the only ones we have got to teach our kids. There are certain good manners which need to be taught to a kid irrespective of the country in which we live.

The fact is that there are some of the good manners which even us adults do not know about. If we think that we know everything as an adult, how many do we honestly follow in our day to day life?

In our busy lives, we even ignore some of the etiquettes in places where we need to follow though we knew about it very well. For example, the etiquette which we need to follow when we use an Elevator at the workplace.

When we ourselves do not follow good manners sometimes, how can we teach our kids?

The ignored or less focused Etiquettes:

Elevator & Escalator Etiquettes:

  • Standing in a Queue.

– How do we feel, when someone cuts you and grabs his ticket from the ticket counter? If he/she in an urgency, they should have asked your permission at least on whether they can go before you. Haven’t we felt that many times before?

  • At the Elevator/Lift Area.

– How many of us stand on the right-hand side of the Elevator while waiting for it?

– Do we stand away from the Elevator door while waiting for it?

– How many of us hold the door of the elevator for a person who had almost reached the lift?

– Do we move to the back once entered into an Elevator or do we stand right after the buttons for an early exit?

We all need to think once again as the kids learn most of the good habits from us parents.

  • At an Escalator.

– How many of us know the below mentioned? Even if we know, do we follow?

We need to stand at the right-hand side of the escalator while standing and leave the left-hand side free for those who are in a hurry and want to walk.

I do not even know this until last month. Nowadays, every time we go to a Shopping Mall, I tell my kid that we need to stand on the right at the escalator if we are not walking.

Road Etiquettes:

  • On the Road.

– Especially, if we you are in India? How many of us had taught our kids that we need to allow an emergency vehicle to pass on the road?

– How do we stop our vehicle at a signal? Before the stop line or over the stop line or after the stop line?

What is a Zebra crossing? How many of us had taught our kids about it? We do not see that in most of the roads nowadays in India, at least from what I had seen. That is again a different story.

– How often we honk?

Yes, there are times when I honked without a break just because I am in a hurry. But, is that not my responsibility to start at the right time considering the traffic?

– How many of us give preference to the pedestrians on road?

Above mentioned are not just traffic rules but an etiquette which needs to be followed by all. Whether we drive or not drive does not matter here.

Other Etiquettes:

  • Say, “please,” when making a request.
  • Use the words, “Excuse me,” when burping and while sneezing irrespective of the place.
  • Say, “Excuse me,” and move away from the crowd when passing gas.
  • Do not interrupt anyone when they are already in a discussion.
  • Close the door while using the restroom.
  • Do not belittle others in front of a crowd.
  • Not to ignore anyone in a group while discussing.
  • Cover while coughing with an elbow or with the napkins.
  • Do not ask questions that might hurt others feelings.
  • Do not stare and remark at someone who looks different.
  • Help the needy.
  • Do not scratch the body parts in public.
  • Do not use tooth pick in such a way that is visible to others.

Software Jobs – Our Paychecks Stops, The Moment We Stop Working.

How safe are our software jobs?

The term pink slip is not something which we haven’t heard about before when it comes to software jobs. But, what’s new is the number or the count of pink slips being issued by the software based employers to their employees.

Our Paychecks Stops, The Moment We Stop Working.

software jobs

Whom should we blame here?

To blame is very easy.

Some of us might feel that the software companies and the market conditions are the ones to be blamed. But, if we look a bit more, we the employees do have a role to play in this blame game.

None of the providers of the software jobs in India or in the world mention or ever mentioned saying that the job offered is permanent. I do not think that we have got such a clause in the offer letters we receive.

But, what we do have is a clause saying that there is a possibility of termination based on the performance and some of the other criteria’s. When it comes to performance, it is not wholly the employees but also the performance of the employer. This is something which we are witnessing for the past few months around the world.

Automation – An Evolving Term:

Automation had always proved that they can help the information technology sector companies. It ensures to keep the profit statistics of a company to go high on the green in the profit and loss statement.

The term Automation – known for gulping good numbers of head counts and make m disappear in the job market in no time. From my perspective, it is the major competing force which stands against a software developer who physically works when comes to job security.

All these being said, there is one thing we should remember always. The huge number of lines of code written for that automation to work is not something which had fallen from the sky one fine day. We, the software engineers are the brain behind those lines of code which is the crux for the automation to work.

India – Not The Only Destination For Companies Abroad:

There was a time when software developers in India are the most preferred by developed countries. But, that scenario is no longer valid.

I have seen some of the clients focusing on to the professionals in Ukraine when compared to the professionals in the software jobs in India. The main reason towards this change is the billing rate. The perspective of the companies abroad had changed. They believe that it is very easy to get a person scale up in a new technology if the person can communicate and understand the opposite party.

The above is the best reason why people from under developed countries too had started to focus learning the global language English.

The Good & The Bad News:

With respect to the software jobs in India – There is a good drop in the numbers of the issuance of pink slips. But in parallel the hike percentage, an employee receives and received so far is also at the lower level. These things do not mean that our jobs are secure and the market is back to normal or picking up.

As we all know already. Yes, it is a rough patch for the software jobs in India and this rough patch has come to stay for a while.

It is very evident,

– when we compare the total number of the jobs created by companies this year and the previous year.

– when we compare the salary hikes given this year with the previous year.

– Also, from the podcasts of many HR professionals from some of the software firms.

How To Secure Our Jobs?

With Automation on the left and organizational restructuring on the right, we still have got few options.

Issuance of pink slips will not stop but what we as an employee can do is to upskill ourselves. The term up-skill had found a great spot in the dictionaries of a software jobs provider as well as a software developer.

Realizing the need to up-skill and improving our knowledge is the best option we have got if we want to secure our jobs in this era. This is applicable not only for the software jobs in India but for all the software professionals around the world.

The Attitude:

The first and the foremost is to change our perspective or attitude towards our jobs. Instead of thinking how to safeguard our jobs, think on how to regularize our paychecks. Without a paycheck, we are nothing. But, remember paychecks are not dependent on one single employer.

The Tips:

  • Do Not Lose Hope

– The company in which we are now is not the only one. If not this then some other company, remember that.

  • Up-Skill/Re-Skill

– Accommodate yourself to learn new niche skills. The software jobs market sees a good number of new technologies daily. Nowadays, they are like the mushrooms that grow after rains.

– For instance, there are big names like SAP HANA, Big Data, Hadoop, Cloud, Internet Of Things (IoT) and more.

– Online websites like Udemy, Cloudera and more can help us learn new technologies without wasting time on commuting.

  • Learn Coding

– Some people do not feel comfortable with coding. But, if you a re person who likes coding, then sharpen your skill further.

For example, in the field of SAP technology. ABAP developers play a role of a coder where they write codes in the application layer of the system. But with the introduction of SAP HANA, the old coding techniques are not always helpful. The SAP technology has got a term now referring ABAP On HANA with some tweaking’s on the approach.

  • Learn New Language

– Mastering a new language is an incredible gift.

– Try mobile applications like Duolingo to learn new languages. 30 minutes of our time daily with this app can help us learn a new language.

– Software companies in India had already reduced their focus towards the USA market. Learning a foreign language will project you as a great asset to your employer. It won’t be wise for them to cut you down.

  • Advertise Yourself

– Nobody will project your efficiency to your boss if not you. If you cannot showcase yourself, then you are doing a big mistake.

  • Be Consistent

– Being consistent helps you to taste Success.

– It is very easy to achieve a certain level but the difficulty lies in how we keep that level. Consistency is the only one that can help here.

  • Manage Time

– People who manage their time well had never failed in their career and life.

– Reach office on time and leave at the correct time.

– Ensure not to miss a deadline of your tasks.

  • When You Don’t Know, Raise The Flag – Ask

– Asking is one of the traits which employers look for. By asking things you do not know in your work, you not only gain knowledge but also shows your willingness to learn.

  • Listen & Let Your Actions Speak

– Empty vessels make noise. Listening is a very powerful weapon when it comes to career.

  • Motivate Others

– Be a go to person.

– Inspire others by your knowledge and behavior.

– Drive people to go beyond their ability and help them achieve an extra mile whenever possible.

  • Put Yourself In Other’s Shoes

– If we cannot understand what others feel, then we are nothing. This is one of the critical aspects which we need to have at the workplace.

  • Build Your Network & Resume

– Building professional network plays a great role in a successful career.

– It is important that we update our resume once in three months at least. If you do not have anything to update, then stop – you are in a wrong direction.

  • Treat Everyone With Respect

– Everyone is good at something. No one is good at everything.

– Never underestimate others especially at work. You will never know when he/she would become your boss.

  • Think, How To Become An Employer

– Love your job, not the employer. You will never know when you would be asked to leave.

– Read technical as well as non-technical books, try to come up with ideas which will help you become a boss.

Software jobs are very volatile like a Bitcoin digital currency nowadays. It is going to be that way for long.

We cannot prevent any employers of the software jobs to stay away from trimming their work force. Same goes with the automation and organizational restructurings.

But, it is our responsibility to ensure that we stay in the software job market at least until we close our home, study, and auto loans.

How long can we run a family without a paycheck?

Our Savior credit card will not help us for long.

Captcha – A Powerful Disoriented Term We Ignore

Captcha – A Term That We Come Across Daily, But Ignore

CAPTCHA – A disoriented words which are found in most of the websites we browse on the internet. I can bet that at least once daily we enter these jumbled dancing letters in a box when we indulge in a task online.

For example, while booking a train ticket in IRCTC website.

It is a sad and also a true fact that captcha is one of the plugins which most of us ignore without knowing his importance.

How many of us know the importance of a Captcha?

I do admit that I ignored this term until yesterday like most of you who are reading this article. I do not know much about it. Was thinking that it is there to ensure that humans are accessing the internet and not the Aliens. Though I know it is a security feature, I had never bothered to get to know how much important it is.

Ha Ha Ha…

I feel like laughing when I recollect the understanding I had on Captcha until yesterday. May be, I had correlated it more with an Alien after watching the movie “The Independence Day”.

Acronym of CAPTCHA:

The term CAPTCHA stands for,

Turing test to tell
Computers &
Humans are

In my words: An automated test to differentiate between Computers and Human Beings.

What is a Turing Test?

It is a method for identifying whether or not a computer is capable of thinking like a human. This test is the basis for the philosophy behind Artificial Intelligence (AI).

  • It is a plug in available in most of the web forms to enhance security.
  • They block or manage spammers, non-human visitors like a bot from posting wherever they want in a web form.

Example: Imagine, you are booking a movie ticket online and all of a sudden a computer program or a bot, books a lot of tickets in a snap of a finger.

This term we ignore most of the time help us prevent these scenarios from happening.

Bot (aka) web robot – is a software application (based on scripts) that performs automated tasks over the internet.

Why Distortions, Twists & Turns On A Captcha?

Computers are not made out of words. They do not understand words or terms which are distorted and with twists and turns. This is the reason why computer coding came into the picture.

On the other hand, a human can interpret or decipher letters which are out of shape, faded and stretched. Hope this explains to us why it is difficult to create an Intelligent Robot.

So, with the twists and turns, this powerful word misguides or tricks bots from spamming.

The Evolution Of CAPTCHA:

First came the CAPTCHA, founded in the year 2003 by Luis von Ahn and his team of researchers.

CAPTCHA – 2003

Distorted words, which bots had started to handle in short time.

reCAPTCHA – 2008

  • Hard words from books were translated to digital texts.
  • This version had replaced distorted texts of the previous version.
  • This came with the quote Stop Spam. Read Books.
  • The digital text taken from the books were difficult for the computers to understand.
  • Google had acquired reCAPTCHA, introduced images with street numbers in the captcha box.

Pain Points: It was not helping the people who are visually impaired and people with Dyslexia. Then comes the audio facility to meet the needs.

  • Twists and Turns besides Noise came onto the stage.

  • A click from the user on “I am not a robot”.
  • An HTTP request goes to Google with the details of the user like,

– Internet Protocol (IP) address
– Date and Time
– Geographic Location
– Browser Details
– Time consumed by the user to scroll, drag, navigate, click etc. and more other details.

  • Risk Analysis Program at Google analyze the user based on the above details and confirm that the user is a Human and not a Bot.
  • If the engine finds it difficult to confirm, then comes another test or challenge for the user. The test is to recognize an image as shown below.

What Next?

Let us wait and see.

Hope, the content helped you to understand what these jumbled words are all about.

Alrighty then, let me see how to get this wonder term plug in added on to my website.

Toilet Hygiene – Shut The Lid Before You Flush

A Simple But Powerful Good Habit:

May be, the title Toilet Hygiene makes you think about Harpic or Domex or Similar?

I am here to emphasize that there is something even more important than those cleaning agents.

Toilet Hygiene

Isn’t it true that we all ensure to have a toilet cleaner in our “to buy” groceries list every month?

It’s a good thing that we try to get the best cleaning agents for our home to ensure Toilet Hygiene. But, there is a much more important thing than the cleaning agents which most of us fail to practice.

Do you place your toilet seat and lid closed when you press the flush button?

Toilet Hygiene

If you are already doing it, Awesome, Thank you for being kind to others by your action.

Above is the number 1 step which every human needs to follow when it comes to Toilet Hygiene.

For all others who fail to do the above mentioned important step.

Do you know why do we need to close the toilet seat and lid before flushing?

Toilet Hygiene

Not always the previous day’s outside food is the cause of diarrhea we experience.

By not closing the toilet lid while flushing, we leave chances for the bacteria from the excrete to spread into the air. These bacteria’s stays back around the toilet and its nearby spots like soap trays, bath tubs etc.
Imagine what happens if you are placing the toothbrush nearby. These bacteria can lead to diarrhea and unwanted diseases not only to the next user of the toilet but also to ourselves as well.

Above mentioned is also the reason why we need to keep the restroom door’s closed at all the time. Especially, when it comes to people who reside in a single, double, triple and more bedroom flats.

May be, now you understood the reason why the restrooms were built at the last corner or outside the house in olden days.

How many of us consider finding or suggesting a correct spot for our restrooms when we book a flat?

I assume may be 20 – 30 % of the whole population.
When that being the statistics, it’s just a simple act which we all need to practice to ensure that we don’t bring in trouble for others because of our laziness.

Toilet Hygiene @ Home:

To all Men including me:

Think once about the kids and ladies at home. Please ensure that you lift the toilet seat and close the toilet lid once you are done, here after.

If you are a proud father, then be an example to your kids. Remember, you are the hero for them. Teach them Toilet Hygiene.

Toilet Hygiene

For Men, it’s just easy to go for a pee, flush the toilet and come back which is not the case for a woman. Never forget that our aim to the toilet bowl is not always perfect. Hence, please do not hesitate to lift the toilet seat too before peeing. Ensure that you leave the place clean for others who had to use the seat. Recollect those Toilet Hygiene lesson you had read when you were a kid.

Toilet Hygiene

Failed to lift the seat due to an emergency?

Do not worry, it happens some times.

Do spend few seconds to use the water jet pipe available to clean the seat and dry the seat using tissues before you leave. You can also try wiping the seat with a toilet seat sanitizing spray and tissue paper if available.

Is there a use in placing a costly air freshener in the restroom when the room is not in a usable state for the next user?

This is basic manners which we can’t afford to ignore, not anymore if there are people out there who don’t follow so far.
This habit is very important than choosing between the cleaning agents and air fresheners for our home to upkeep Toilet Hygiene.
Let’s be the best examples for our kids by helping them understand the importance of closing and lifting the toilet seat after use.

Toilet Hygiene @ The Workplace:

The below mentioned are applicable to everyone irrespective of the gender.
At home, we ourselves spend time on cleaning the toilets most of the time. But, that is not the case when it comes to the work place.
  • Be considerate and think about the janitor who cleans the toilet. He/She is the person who helps and prevent us from getting sick by keeping the restrooms clean.
  • Do not treat them bad by not flushing the toilets even if you are in an urgency. They are more prone to health issues than us.
  • Say Thank You once in a while at least and smile at them when you come across them.
  • Follow the Toilet Hygiene tip mentioned above.
  • Please throw the used tissues into the dustbin.
  • If you find water scarcity, please consider reporting it to the right channel so that the water supply is back.
  • Do not throw the tissues inside the urinals.
  • The urinals are not the space for spitting chewing gums.

Imagine – What if we need to remove the chewing gum from the urinals ourselves? I am sure that would be the last time we entered into a restroom chewing a gum.

  • Do not create a mess with the soiled tissue papers, face wash creams, and fallen hair near the wash basin. Utilize the dustbin for disposables.
  • Ensure that you also clean the top of the wash basin taps after you use it. Never leave it with soap wash marks on it.
  • Allow water to run for few seconds in the wash basin to ensure that you do not leave any dirt in it after you gargle.

Always remember, “Prevention is better than cure”.
